The East African Community (EAC) is an intergovernmental organisation composed of seven countries in the Great Lakes region of East Africa: the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the United Republic of Tanzania, the Republics of Kenya, Burundi, Rwanda, South Sudan, and Uganda. Évariste Ndayishimiye, the president of Burundi, is the current EAC chairman. The organisation was founded in 1967, collapsed in 1977, and was revived on 7 July 2000. In 2008, after negotiations with the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), the EAC agreed to an expanded free trade area including the member states of all three organizations. The EAC is an integral part of the African Economic Community. The capital of the EAC is Arusha, Tanzania. The EAC is a potential precursor to the establishment of the East African Federation, a proposed federation of its members into a single sovereign state. In 2010, the EAC launched its own common market for goods, labour, and capital within the region, with the goal of creating a common currency and eventually a full political federation. In 2013, a protocol was signed outlining their plans for launching a monetary union within 10 years. In September 2018, a committee was formed to begin the process of drafting a regional constitution. Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda have cooperated with each other since the early 20th century. The East African Currency Board provided a common currency from 1919 to 1966. The customs union between Kenya and Uganda in 1917, which Tanganyika joined in 1927, was followed by the East African High Commission (EAHC) from 1948 to 1961, the East African Common Services Organization (EACSO) from 1961 to 1967, and the EAC from 1967 to 1977. Burundi and Rwanda joined the EAC on 6 July 2009. Inter-territorial co-operation between the Kenya Colony, the Uganda Protectorate, and the Tanganyika Territory was formalised in 1948 by the EAHC. This provided a customs union, a common external tariff, currency, and postage.

Construire la mobilité durable et inclusive par l’éducation - Quelle implication pour l’entreprise ?

Le domaine de la mobilité est le premier secteur émetteur de gaz à effet de serre en Europe, impactant très négativement le climat. Un monde prisonnier des déplacements, des transports et de l’automobile ne pourra être ni durable ni inclusif. Le toujours plus vite, plus loin et plus souvent nous conduit dans une impasse. Dans cet article, les auteurs se saisissent de ces questions à partir d’une redéfinition de la notion de mobilité, et démontrent que l’éducation est indispensable pour rendre les déplacements plus durables et inclusifs aux plans individuel et collectif. Ils dressent alors le cadre précis d’un engagement des entreprises pour que la mobilité, à partir de l’éducation, puisse engendrer les métamorphoses qui donnent sens à la vie de chacun sans épuiser les ressources de la planète.

On a souvent tendance à se représenter le monde urbain comme une réalité sociale spécifique, comme un territoire isolable ou un morceau de société distinct des autres. Dans cet article, je voudrais inciter à le regarder comme une dimension qui traverse l’ensemble des mondes sociaux contemporains. Si l’on procède ainsi, on s’aperçoit que l’urbanité – ce qui fait le propre de l’urbain – constitue aussi un véhicule pour aborder quelques uns des enjeux majeurs des sociétés d’aujourd’hui.

Evolution de la formation EPFL en géomatique

Parfois, des collègues nous demandent conseil pour recruter un-e jeune ingénieur-e, généralement avec une reprise de bureau à l'horizon. Pourtant, les mêmes collègues ne se pressent pas pour accueillir un-e stagiaire dans leur entreprise pendant l'été. Or, les professionnels qui le font attirent davantage de jeunes. Cet article résume l'évolution de la formation en géomatique à l'EPFL, explique le rôle crucial des stages en entreprise et présente quelques exemples encourageant.
