The Airbus A380 is a large wide-body airliner that was developed and produced by Airbus. It is the world's largest passenger airliner and only full-length double-deck jet airliner.
Airbus studies started in 1988, and the project was announced in 1990 to challenge the dominance of the Boeing 747 in the long-haul market. The then-designated A3XX project was presented in 1994; Airbus launched the € billion (10.7billion)A380programmeon19December2000.ThefirstprototypewasunveiledinToulouseon18January2005,withitsfirstflighton27April2005.ItthenobtaineditstypecertificatefromtheEuropeanAviationSafetyAgency(EASA)andtheUSFederalAviationAdministration(FAA)on12December2006.Duetodifficultieswiththeelectricalwiring,theinitialproductionwasdelayedbytwoyearsandthedevelopmentcostsalmostdoubled.ItwasfirstdeliveredtoSingaporeAirlineson15October2007andenteredserviceon25October.Productionpeakedat30peryearin2012and2014.However,afterthelargestcustomer,Emirates,reduceditslastorderinFebruary2019,AirbusannouncedthatA380productionwouldendin2021.On16December2021,Emiratesreceivedits123rdA380,whichwasthe251standlastdeliveredbyAirbus.TheA380′sestimated25 billion development cost was not recouped by the time Airbus ended production.
