As of July 31, 2023, the town has an estimated population of 13,232 and a density of 355 persons per km2. The total area is 37.25 km2.
In the past, the town of Kawatana was split into two villages named East Kawatana Village and West Kawatana Village. In 1828, the two villages merged and became Kawatana Village. In 1934, Kawatana Village was upgraded into town status. During 1934 to 1962, nearby towns were incorporated into Kawatana.
During World War II, manufacturing facilities associated with the Sasebo Naval Arsenal were constructed in Kawatana, leading to a temporary increase in population. The economy of the area is now heavily dependent on agriculture and fishing.
Kawatana is located in the central area of Nagasaki Prefecture, on the northern coast of Omura Bay. The Kawatana River also flows through the town.
