Abstract

Gases turn out to be a very attractive medium for optical fiber sensing, showing highly flexible possibilities though widely unexploited so far. A new era opens for fiber sensing, exploiting the unprecedented potentialities of fluids.

An optical fiber, or optical fibre in Commonwealth English, is a flexible, transparent fiber made by drawing glass (silica) or plastic to a diameter slightly thicker than that of a human hair. Plastic optical fiber

Plastic optical fiber (POF) or polymer optical fiber is an optical fiber that is made out of polymer. Its chief advantage over the glass product, other aspect being equal, is its robustness under bending and stretching. Since 2014 a full family of PHY transceivers have been available in the market enabling the design and manufacturing of home networking equipment delivering Gigabit speeds into the home.

Fiber Bragg grating

A fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is a type of distributed Bragg reflector constructed in a short segment of optical fiber that reflects particular wavelengths of light and transmits all others. This is achieved by creating a periodic variation in the refractive index of the fiber core, which generates a wavelength-specific dielectric mirror. Hence a fiber Bragg grating can be used as an inline optical fiber to block certain wavelengths, can be used for sensing applications, or it can be used as wavelength-specific reflector.
