This lecture explores the causal mechanisms of behavior by investigating brain function at the level of individual neurons and their synaptic interactions within the living mammalian brain. It covers cellular measurements of brain function, perturbations of brain function using optogenetics, quantitative modeling of brain function, and the scientific method of falsifying hypotheses. The goal is to obtain a causal understanding of behavior through the correlation and perturbation of neuronal activity with behavior.
