This lecture explores the damage patterns in regular glass, strengthened glass, sapphire, and spinel rods through ball-on-rod experiments. High-speed images in plate impact and long rods are used to describe damage in glasses. The lecture delves into the shock-induced damage behind a shock front, changes in properties due to pressure, and an energy-based model of compressive splitting in heterogeneous brittle solids.
