This lecture introduces the materials science of magnetic materials, focusing on the properties, concepts, and magnetic parameters of hard magnets. It covers the review of magnetic ordering, critical temperature, elements vs compounds, magnetic hysteresis, demagnetization effect, and domain formation. The optimization of functional magnetic materials involves composition and microstructure optimization, processing, characterization, and structure-property-performance relationships. Various techniques such as Lorentz microscopy, SEMPA, MFM, TXM, STXM, and PEEM are used for imaging magnetic materials. The lecture also discusses the production of rare earth permanent magnets, intrinsic magnetic properties, and the optimization of energy product via large magnetic anisotropy.
