This lecture covers the evolution of optical fiber communication through different generations, starting from the first generation at 870 nm with step-index or GRIN MMF fibers and LED or laser diode light sources, to the latest developments in coherent detection and wavelength-division multiplexing. It discusses the operation at different wavelengths, the impact of fiber attenuation and dispersion, the use of optical fiber amplifiers, and the introduction of WDM to increase capacity. The lecture also touches on recent advancements such as the HKA open cable system and the JUPITER submarine cable network, highlighting the continuous efforts to enhance bandwidth, connectivity, and reliability in optical communication systems.
