This lecture introduces the interferometry technique developed by Ludwig Mark, son of Mr. Ernst Mark, in the late 19th century. The Mark Zander system uses a difference in phase between two light rays to create interference fringes, allowing visualization of shock waves and variations in refractive indices and mass density. Unlike other visualization techniques, interferometry provides quantitative data on shock wave intensity and density variations. However, its complex setup and sensitivity to vibrations make it less popular than other methods. The lecture showcases images generated using interferometry, highlighting the evolution of shock wave visualization technology over the years.
