This lecture provides an overview of 3rd order nonlinear effects in waveguides, focusing on the induced nonlinear polarization, derivation of the nonlinear refractive index, and nonlinear absorption coefficient. The optical properties of a nonlinear medium dominated by 3rd order nonlinearity are examined, with emphasis on materials that are centrosymmetric on a macroscopic scale. The lecture delves into topics such as nonlinear propagation, third harmonic generation, perturbation on the wave, Kerr effect, nonlinear absorption, and the origin of the nonlinear refractive index.
