This lecture explores the impact of mixing on chemical reactions, focusing on the segregation characterization and mixing characterization. It discusses the kinetics of segregation decay, the effect of segregation intensity on bimolecular reactions, and the comparison of segregation in ideal Continuous Stirred Tank Reactors (CSTR) and Plug Flow Reactors (PFR). The lecture also covers the modification of rate equations due to segregation intensity, the conversion in fully segregated CSTR, and the use of chemical methods to characterize mixing efficiency. Various methods, such as physical methods like batch reactors and imaging techniques, as well as chemical methods like consecutive competitive reactions, are analyzed to understand the relationship between mixing and reaction performance.
