This lecture covers the process of methane production in anaerobic digesters, explaining the two main steps involved: conversion of complex organic compounds to organic acids by acetogens, followed by the transformation of organic acids into methane by methanogens. The lecture also discusses biogas production, examples of methane generation from WWTP sludge, and the challenges hindering the widespread adoption of anaerobic digestion.
