This lecture discusses the tragic Challenger accident in January 1986, which resulted in the loss of the crew and the spaceship during ascent. The cause of the accident was a failure in the design of the Solid Rocket Booster field joint, exacerbated by low temperatures. The Rogers Commission investigation identified the flaw and recommended modifications to prevent future incidents, leading to safety improvements in the Space Shuttle program.
