This lecture covers the mechanisms of chloride ingress in marine concrete structures, analyzing data from various exposed concrete samples in Denmark and Norway. It discusses the elemental zonation, appearance, and phases in marine-exposed concrete, as well as the pH dependency of chloride binding. The lecture also explores the influence of steel-concrete interface characteristics on chloride-induced corrosion onset, emphasizing the importance of moisture content, metallurgy, and rebar orientation. Additionally, it examines the impact of chloride ingress on cracked concrete beams after 25 years of exposure, highlighting the vulnerability of spacers to increased corrosion.
