Introduction & Global Warming

This lecture addresses the major world challenge of primary energy consumption, with a focus on renewables, hydroelectricity, nuclear energy, coal, natural gas, and oil. It discusses the large CO2 emissions leading to global warming, local pollution, and loss of diversity. The presentation covers EPFL societal challenges related to energy, emphasizing the future of secure, clean, and efficient energy, smart, green, and integrated transport, sustainability in managing land and water, clean water and food for all, and preserving biodiversity. It also delves into the 2030 agenda for sustainable development, sustainable development goals related to energy supply, economics, and transition, and the key indicators to understand the state of the world in terms of energy consumption and GDP per capita.
