This lecture introduces discrete geographic variables used to represent phenomena distributed in geographic space at different scales. These variables can vary based on their geometric properties, with points varying only by position, while lines and polygons can vary by position, size, and shape. Various indices, such as the Gravelius compactness index, are commonly used to characterize discrete geographic variables, like watersheds in hydrology. With this knowledge, the next lesson will cover describing spatial relationships between sets of geographic objects.
