The function of “the street” : an ethnography of street basketball amongst gangs in the barrios of Caracas, Venezuela. In general, sports are neither limited to sites with borders fixed by international federations, nor do they respect rules approved by such bodies. This is because, in general, it is in the large cities that "sports" are invented and where the majority of the world’s sportsmen live, in poor neighborhoods where a significant part of the local youth are members of gangs,. These practicies are the result of improvisation and creativity that may serve as an answer to the uncertainty of life. In the little streets of the slum, sports provide an arena where the local youth can invent innovative sport cultures and sociability, and reorganize the world to give a new « sense to life ». Street basketball such as the kind played in the barrios of Caracas shows us how sports, far from representing the useless “waste of time” we might imagine, contributes in fact to the consolidation of urban popular culture for those faced with bullets and with the police who block many a “sports careers” for young criminals.
