A method for optimizing at least one of a geometry, an implantation procedure, and/or stimulation protocol of one or more electrodes for an electrical stimulation of a target structure in a nervous system of a living being by a computer device, the method comprising the steps of providing a morphology of the target structure, performing a geometric optimization of the one or more electrodes based on (i) a geometric parametrization of the one or more electrodes and the morphology of the target structure, and (ii) an objective function evaluating a quality of the one or more electrodes in relationship to the target structure, finite element modelling (FEM) of the one or more electrodes implanted in the target structure according to a geometry found during the step of performing the geometric optimization to generate electric potential maps, interpolating the electric potential maps to potential fiber node locations of the target structure to build a lead field matrix (LFM), and biophysical modeling of fiber stimulation to create a dataset of biophysical model responses based on the LFM and a first subset of potential stimulation protocols.
