The Laboratory of Experimental Biophysics (LEB) at EPFL focuses on revealing the biophysical principles underlying the dynamic organization of cellular organelles and protein assemblies. They investigate mitochondrial dynamics, including fission, fusion, growth, and transport, to understand their role in energy production and genome maintenance. By custom-building high throughput super-resolution microscopes, they can quantify mitochondrial constrictions and extract the energies and forces required for division. LEB also explores the coordination of genome replication, cell growth, and division in bacteria, alongside studying the microtubule cytoskeleton's structure and post-translational modifications. Their research is enabled by technology, including computer vision integration and label-free imaging methods.
