THEMA, the Theory of Environment, Materials and Architecture laboratory at EPFL, focuses on studying the material, construction, and afterlives of architecture. Led by Assistant Professor Sarah Nichols, the team explores topics such as concrete research, the Anthropocene, and the maintenance and repair of reinforced concrete structures. Through projects like the Beton Exhibition and the Anthropocene Square Meter prototype model, THEMA aims to raise awareness about the impact of human activities on the environment. The lab values interdisciplinary collaboration and practical experience, believing that academic work is enriched by engaging with real-world challenges and diverse perspectives.
