It is the capital of the Province of Cádiz, one of eight that make up the autonomous community of Andalusia. In the 18th century, the Port in the Bay of Cádiz consolidated as the main harbor of mainland Spain, enjoying the virtual monopoly of trade with the Americas until 1778. It is also the site of the University of Cádiz.

The region is southeast of the Gulf of Mexico and the North American mainland, east of Central America, and north of South America.
