Image quality can refer to the level of accuracy with which different imaging systems capture, process, store, compress, transmit and display the signals that form an image. Another definition refers to image quality as "the weighted combination of all of the visually significant attributes of an image". The difference between the two definitions is that one focuses on the characteristics of signal processing in different imaging systems and the latter on the perceptual assessments that make an image pleasant for human viewers. Image quality should not be mistaken with . Image fidelity refers to the ability of a process to render a given copy in a perceptually similar way to the original (without distortion or information loss), i.e., through a digitization or conversion process from analog media to digital image. 3D Reconstruction of Optical Diffraction Tomography Based on a Neural Network Model

Optical tomography has been widely investigated for biomedical imaging applications. In recent years, it has been combined with digital holography and has been employed to produce high quality images of phase objects such as cells. In this Thesis, we look into some of the newest optical Diffraction Tomography (DT) based techniques to solve Three-Dimensional (3D) reconstruction problems and discuss and compare some of the leading ideas and papers. Then we propose a neural-network-based algorithm to solve this problem and apply it on both synthetic and biological samples. Conventional phase tomography with coherent light and off axis recording is performed. The Beam Propagation Method (BPM) is used to model scattering and each x-y plane is modeled by a layer of neurons in the BPM. The network's output (simulated data) is compared to the experimental measurements and the error is used for correcting the weights of the neurons (the refractive indices of the nodes) using standard error back-propagation techniques. The proposed algorithm is detailed and investigated. Then, we look into resolution-conserving regularization and discuss a method for selecting regularizing parameters. In addition, the local minima and phase unwrapping problems are discussed and ways of avoiding them are investigated. It is shown that the proposed learning tomography (LT) achieves better performance than other techniques such as, DT especially when insufficient number or incomplete set of measurements is available. We also explore the role of regularization in obtaining higher fidelity images without losing resolution. It is experimentally shown that due to overcoming multiple scattering, the LT reconstruction greatly outperforms the DT when the sample contains two or more layers of cells or beads. Then, reconstruction using intensity measurements is investigated. 3D reconstruction of a live cell during apoptosis is presented in a time-lapse format. At the end, we present a final comparison with leading papers and commercially available systems. It is shown that -compared to other existing algorithms- the results of the proposed method have better quality. In particular, parasitic granular structures and the missing cone artifact are improved. Overall, the perspectives of our approach are pretty rich for high-resolution tomographic imaging in a range of practical applications.

Motion Correction in Magnetic Resonance Imaging Using the Signal of Free-Induction-Decay

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is highly susceptible to subject's motion and can significantly degrade image quality. In brain MRI exams, involuntary head movements can affect the sampled k-space data. Such unintended alterations may result in visible image artifacts such as blurring, ghosting and others, and therefore potentially disqualify the image from diagnostic purposes. Methods to characterize motion in order to mitigate its impact on image quality exist and range from MR sequence based techniques to scanner independent tracking systems. Although, many motion detection and correction strategies have been proposed in the past, a universal solution to the problem does not exist yet. The work of this thesis was focused on the exploitation of the motion information from a multi-channel Free Induction Decay Navigator (FID) to develop and to optimize motion detection and correction methods in structural brain MRI. After a short introduction to the motion problem in MRI the fundamental methodology behind FID based motion detection is presented and used in this thesis. Considerable work has already been done in the field of motion correction for MRI that is summarized by reviewing the most recent literature, which allowed to reveal some pitfalls in the present approaches and to demonstrate the motivation behind an FID-based method for motion correction in MRI. The first study was conducted to demonstrate that substantial motion information is contained in the multi-channel FID signal, whereby the FID signal is correlated with motion parameters that were obtained from a highly accurate optical tracking system. This work was able to confirm the theoretical foundations from the Biot-Savart law, however, also revealed that a pure FID-based method is not sufficient to exactly calculate the underlying motion trajectory. It is speculated that scanner and subject related information might lead to a closed form solution, yet it was not possible to derive one due to a high dimensionality of the motion problem. Therefore, two alternative approaches were developed to utilize the FID signal for motion detection and correction in MRI. First, a prospective motion correction strategy for an MP-RAGE sequence is demonstrated, whereby the FID signal is used to trigger a prospective motion correction mechanism. The second alternative approach describes how the FID signal can be used to evaluate the quality of an already acquired image and how the FID signal can be used as an optimizer for an autofocusing based retrospective motion correction technique.

X-ray imaging detector for radiological applications adapted to the context and requirements of low- and middle-income countries

This paper describes the development of a novel medical x-ray imaging system adapted to the needs and constraints of low- and middle-income countries. The developed system is based on an indirect conversion chain: a scintillator plate produces visible light when excited by the x rays, and then, a calibrated multi-camera architecture converts the visible light from the scintillator into a set of digital images. The partial images are then unwarped, enhanced, and stitched through parallel field programmable gate array processing units and specialized software. All the detector components were carefully selected focusing on optimizing the system’s image quality, robustness, cost-effectiveness, and capability to work in harsh tropical environments. With this aim, different customized and commercial components were characterized. The resulting detector can generate high quality medical diagnostic images with detective quantum efficiency levels up to 60% (@2.34 μGy), even under harsh environments, i.e., 60 °C and 98% humidity.
