SeveriansThe Severians, also Severyans, Siverians, or Siverianians (Севяране; Севери; Северяне; Сiверяни) were a tribe or tribal confederation of early East Slavs occupying areas to the east of the middle Dnieper River and southeast of the Danube River. They are mentioned by the Bavarian Geographer (9th century), Emperor Constantine VII (956–959), the Khazar ruler Joseph (c. 955), and in the Primary Chronicle (1113). The etymology of the name "Severian" is uncertain. The name of the Severia region originated from the Slavic tribes.
VolhyniansThe Volhynians (Волиняни, Volyniany, Wołynianie) were an East Slavic tribe of the Early Middle Ages and the Principality of Volhynia in 987–1199. Russian historiography on regions like Volhynia, specifically before the emergence of the Soviet Union in 1922, brought together Eastern European lands as justification for Romanov rule. From this two branches of historiography can be traced into the 20th century. The split stems from different arguments surrounding the stability of the Kievan Rus' prior to the Mongol Invasion in the 13th Century.
Ruthenian lionThe Ruthenian lion (Руський лев, Lew ruski), Ukrainian (Russiae) lion, or Halychian (Galician) lion is a golden lion on an azure background. The lion was featured on the historic coat of arms of the Kingdom of Rus, the Ruthenian Voivodeship and the Western Ukrainian People's Republic. During the revolutions in the Austrian Empire in 1848, it became one of the national symbols of Ukrainians and the Ukrainian national liberation movement. Today it is featured on the coat of arms of the city of Lviv and its surrounding province, Lviv Oblast.
