Manufacturing execution systems (MES) are computerized systems used in manufacturing to track and document the transformation of raw materials to finished goods. MES provides information that helps manufacturing decision-makers understand how current conditions on the plant floor can be optimized to improve production output. MES works as real-time monitoring system to enable the control of multiple elements of the production process (e.g. inputs, personnel, machines and support services). MES may operate across multiple function areas, for example management of product definitions across the product life-cycle, resource scheduling, order execution and dispatch, production analysis and downtime management for overall equipment effectiveness (OEE), product quality, or materials track and trace. The modelling of a manufacturing enterprise is not an easy task. A manufacturing enterprise is a complex system where technical knowledge is as important as management abilities. For taking more accurate management decisions and for these decisions to have a quick impact on manufacturing activities, the communication between the higher and lower levels of an enterprise must be fluent. The fluent communication of the different levels of an enterprise is called integration. When this integration is achieved thanks to the use of computers, it is called Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM). In the first part of this work, we study the methodologies that have been developed for enterprise modelling and integration and we propose a new functional analysis technique based on the combination of certain elements of the studied methodologies. The second part of this work deals with low level communication aspects of distributed control systems and shows how to use SFCs for determining the state of graphical components and for composite event detection.

Linking E-commerce to logistics simulation: Visiones, the missing chain

This paper presents the design, development and application of a simulation-based methodology dedicated to the assessment of 13213 e-commerce introduction within manufacturing systems. A two-stage approach is presented: the first stage aims at predicting the evolution of the e-commerce activities through the identification of electronic market characteristics and their possible evolution scenarios. The second stage is dedicated to the evaluation of logistic performances of industrial systems by means of discrete event modelling and simulation. The proposed approach has been developed, tested and integrated in a commercial software named VISIONeS. In this paper, the methodology is pointed out, highlighting the benefits of the approach supported by the VISIONeS decision support software. The model structure and the features of the latter are presented with brief implementation results.

Integrated product relationships management: a model to enable concurrent product design and assembly sequence planning

The paper describes a novel approach to product relationships management in the context of concurrent engineering and product lifecycle management (PLM). Current industrial practices in product data management and manufacturing process management systems require better efficiency, flexibility, and sensitivity in managing product information at various levels of abstraction throughout its lifecycle. The aim of the proposed work is to manage vital yet complex and inherent product relationship information to enable concurrent product design and assembly sequence planning. Indeed, the definition of the product with its assembly sequence requires the management and the understanding of the numerous product relationships, ensuring consistency between the product and its components. This main objective stresses the relational design paradigm by focusing on product relationships along its lifecycle. This paper gives the detailed description of the background and models which highlight the need for a more efficient PLM approach. The proposed theoretical approach is then described in detail. A separate paper will focus on the implementation of the proposed approach in a PLM-based application, and an in-depth case study to evaluate the implementation of the novel approach will also be given.
