The Appalachian Mountains (Appalaches), often called the Appalachians, are a mountain range in eastern to northeastern North America. Here, the term "Appalachian" refers to several different regions associated with the mountain range, its surrounding hills and the dissected plateau region. The Appalachian range runs from the Island of Newfoundland southwestward to Central Alabama in the United States. (It crosses the 96-square mile archipelago of Saint Pierre and Miquelon, an overseas collectivity of France, meaning it is technically in three countries).

The Battle of Gettysburg (ˈɡɛtᵻsbɜːrɡ) was a major battle in the American Civil War fought by Union and Confederate forces between July 1 and July 3, 1863, in and around Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. In the Battle of Gettysburg, Union Major General George Meade's Army of the Potomac defeated attacks by Confederate General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, halting Lee's invasion of the North and forcing his retreat.

Maryland (USˈmɛrᵻlənd ) is a state in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. It borders Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington, D.C., to its south and west; Pennsylvania to its north; and Delaware and the Atlantic Ocean to its east. With a total land area of , Maryland is the eighth-smallest state by land area, but its population of 6,177,224 ranks it the 18th-most populous state and the fifth-most densely populated. Baltimore is the largest city in the state, and the capital is Annapolis.
