Martin RajmanMartin Rajman is the Executive Director of
Nano-tera.ch
, a large Swiss Research Program funding collaborative multi-disciplinary projects for the engineering of complex systems in Health and the Environment. Since 2008, the Nano-Tera.ch program started more than 100 research projects for a total public funding of more than 95 Mo CHF (~100 Mo USD).
Before being appointed as Nano-Tera.ch Executive Director, Martin Rajman was Director of the EPFL Global Computing Center (CGC), an association of research groups and laboratories of the School of Computer and Communication Sciences fostering interdisciplinary research in the general area of internet computing and distributed information systems. In this position, he was managing more than 20 European projects.
In parallel with his research management activities, Martin Rajman is senior researcher at EPF Lausanne, Switzerland (EPFL). His research interests include Artificial Intelligence, Computational Linguistics and Data-driven Probabilistic Machine Learning.
Previously, he was senior researcher at the Computer Science Department of Telecom Paris-Tech, where he was in charge of the development of a research and teaching activity in the domain of Natural Language Processing.
Martin Rajman is also active in various large scale industry-research collaborations with majors economic players. In particular, he has been involved in the improvement of the product ranking technology used by e-Bay and is currently collaborating with Elsevier on enhanced article recommendation techniques.
Martin Rajman is author or co-author of more than 100 publications and former Director of the Computer Science Series of EPFL-Press (PPUR).
Patrick JermannAfter studies in Geneva (TECFA) and Pittsburgh (LRDC) I joined EPFL in 2003 to coordinate eLearning projects and conduct research in the field of Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL). Starting 2013 I am responsible for MOOCs production at the Center for Digital Education (CEDE).Former Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies and former Member of the Editorial Board for the International Journal of Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (iJCSCL). Specialties: Interaction analysis, research methods, statistical methods, prototyping, software development, pedagogical design.
Romain Simon CollaudRomain is an Art Director living in Fribourg, Switzerland. In 2013, he received a BA in visual communication from ECAL & in 2017, earned a MAS in design research for digital innovation from the EPFL ECAL Lab.He believes that design should be intuitive & revolve around the user. To strengthen this, he learned inclusive design methodologies at the RCA & honed his skills in icon design at the University of Bournemouth. For the latter, he manipulated icons’ aesthetics to evaluate their effect on perceived usability. Many of his projects deal with notions of big data, data visualization & search algorithms. These play a large role in his research work, where he explores navigation principles & aggregation of content in mass information environments. Currently, he is working on a major social network system for elderly people, as well as a digital exhibition whose narrative navigation as well as interactions with literary artifacts create a unique relationship with visitors.Romain is methodical, logical, detail-oriented & a bit of a perfectionist. For his BA thesis, he explored the omnipresence of the grid in daily visual landscapes. After that, he worked as a graphic designer at ECAL for its communication as well as a freelancer for other organisations. He also co-founded a workshop that specializes in graphic design for unique mediums as well as a design collective for conceptual ideas. Today, he works at EPFL ECAL Lab – the EPFL design research center – where he confronts his point of view with engineers & psychologists.
Emily Clare GrovesEmily is a digital designer, researcher and educator. She has a BSc in Human Sciences from University College London, an MA in Information Experience Design from the Royal College of Art, and an MAS in Design Research for Digital Innovation from the EPFL ECAL Lab. Her interests lie at the intersection of culture, technology and food.
Mandresy Ivan Ny HanitraIvan received in 2013 a bachelor degree in Physics and Chemistry from Grenoble Institute of Technology (France), after two years of intensive training at Lycée Pierre de Fermat (France). He currently holds a master degree in Micro and Nanotechnologies for Integrated Systems, a joint degree between Politecnico di Torino (Italy), Grenoble Institute of Technology (France), and EPFL. During this international training, he acquired knowledge in Semiconductor physics and technology, Microtechnology (cleanroom practice), Microelectronics (analog/digital circuits design), Nanoelectronics (state-of-the art of emerging electron devices), Micro-nano systems modelling, VLSI design and testing, Embedded systems, and Optoelectronics. He pursued his master thesis at EPFL, in Electronics Laboratory (Prof. Kayal), developing low-power systems for photoplethysmographic-based heart rate monitoring. Ivan joined the Integrated Systems Laboratory (Prof. De Micheli), in October 2016, where he designed and realized in cleanroom multi-sensing platforms for electrochemical sensing applications.
Jeffrey HuangJeffrey Huang is the Director of the Institute of Architecture at EPFL (starting May 1, 2020), that comprises 25 laboratories and groups. He is also the Head of the Media x Design Laboratory and a Full Professor in Architecture and Computer Science, at the Faculty of Computer and Communication Sciences (IC), and at the Faculty of Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering (ENAC). He holds a DiplArch from ETH Zurich, and Masters and Doctoral Degrees from Harvard University, where he was awarded the Gerald McCue medal for academic excellence. He started his academic career as a researcher at MIT’s Sloan School of Management (Center for Coordination Sciences). In 1998 he returned to Harvard as an Assistant Professor of Architecture and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2001. In 2006 he was named Full Professor at EPFL in Switzerland where he holds joint professorships at I&C and ENAC, and heads the Media x Design Lab. He was also a Visiting Professor at Tsinghua University, a Visiting Fellow at Stanford University’s d.school, a Honorary Visiting Professor at the University of Sheffield, and a Berkman Fellow and Faculty Associate at Harvard University (Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society). Professor Huang’s research examines the convergence of physical and digital architecture. His recent work investigates new artificial design paradigms (design decoding and encoding), theories of experience design, and the application of algorithmic urbanism in Chinese cities. His current teaching examines the possible role of artificial intelligence in architecture (see MxD studios). In collaboration with Muriel Waldvogel, he heads Convergeo, an award-winning, international strategic and experience design firm. From 2014-2017, while on leave from EPFL, he led the creation of a ground-breaking, new school of architecture in Singapore, as the Head of the Architecture and Sustainable Design Pillar at the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), established in collaboration with MIT.
