A projector or image projector is an optical device that projects an (or moving images) onto a surface, commonly a projection screen. Most projectors create an image by shining a light through a small transparent lens, but some newer types of projectors can project the image directly, by using lasers. A virtual retinal display, or retinal projector, is a projector that projects an image directly on the retina instead of using an external projection screen. The most common type of projector used today is called a video projector. Video projectors are digital replacements for earlier types of projectors such as slide projectors and overhead projectors. These earlier types of projectors were mostly replaced with digital video projectors throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, but old analog projectors are still used at some places. A Virtual Keyboard Based on True-3D Optical Ranging

In this paper, a complete system is presented which mimics a QWERTY keyboard on an arbitrary surface. The system consists of a pattern projector and a true-3D range camera for detecting the typing events. We exploit depth information acquired with the 3D range camera and detect the hand region using a pre-computed reference frame. The fingertips are found by analyzing the hands' contour and fitting the depth curve with different feature models. To detect a keystroke, we analyze the feature of the depth curve and map it back to a global coordinate system to find which key was pressed. These steps are fully automated and do not require human intervention. The system can be used in any application requiring zero form factor and minimized or no contact with a medium, as in a large number of cases in human-to-computer interaction, virtual reality, game control, 3D designs, etc.

Proximity Operators for Phase Retrieval

We present a new formulation of a family of proximity operators that generalize the projector step for phase retrieval. These proximity operators for noisy intensity measurements can replace the classical "noise-free" projection in any projection-based algorithm. They are derived from a maximum-likelihood formulation and admit closed form solutions for both the Gaussian and the Poisson cases. In addition, we extend these proximity operators to under-sampled intensity measurements. To assess their performance, these operators are exploited in a classical Gerchberg-Saxton algorithm. We present numerical experiments showing that the reconstructed complex amplitudes with these proximity operators always perform better than using the classical intensity projector, while their computational overhead is moderate.

Shape Projectors for Landmark-Based Spline Curves

We present a generic method to construct orthogonal projectors for two-dimensional landmark-based parametric spline curves. We construct vector spaces that define a geometric transformation (e.g., affine, similarity, and scaling) that is applied to a reference curve. These vector spaces contain all parametric curves up to the chosen transformation. We define the vector spaces implicitly through an orthogonal projection operator and present a theorem that characterizes the projector for landmark-based spline curves, which are popular for the user-interactive analysis of biomedical images. Finally, we show how shape priors are constructed with the spline projector and provide an example of application for the segmentation of microscopy images in biology.
