As of 2014, its population was 27,801,460. Rhaeto-Romance and Gallo-Italic languages are spoken in the region, as opposed to the Italo-Dalmatian languages spoken in the rest of Italy.
UdineUdine (USˈuːdiːneɪ , ˈuːdine; Udin; Utinum) is a city and comune (municipality) in north-eastern Italy, in the middle of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, between the Adriatic Sea and the Carnic Alps. It is the capital of the Regional decentralization entity of Udine. Its population was 100,514 in 2012, 176,000 with the urban area. Names of Udine in different languages and Udine was first attested in medieval Latin records as Udene in 983 and as Utinum around the year 1000. The origin of the name Udine is unclear.

It is sometimes called Eastern Ladin since it shares the same roots as Ladin, but over the centuries, it has diverged under the influence of surrounding languages, including German, Italian, Venetian, and Slovene.
CarniolaCarniola (Kranjska; ˈkɾàːnska, Krain; Carniola; Krajna) is a historical region that comprised parts of present-day Slovenia. Although as a whole it does not exist anymore, Slovenes living within the former borders of the region still tend to identify with its traditional parts Upper Carniola, Lower Carniola (with the sub-part of White Carniola), and to a lesser degree with Inner Carniola. In 1991, 47% of the population of Slovenia lived within the borders of the former Duchy of Carniola.

Abolished in 2017, it was reestablished in 2019 as the Regional decentralization entity of Trieste (ente di decentramento regionale di Trieste; enota deželne decentralizacije Trst; ent di decentrament regjonâl di Triest), and was reactivated on 1 July 2020.
