Bruno Latour

Bruno Latour (latuʁ; 22 June 1947 – 9 October 2022) was a French philosopher, anthropologist and sociologist. He was especially known for his work in the field of science and technology studies (STS). After teaching at the École des Mines de Paris (Centre de Sociologie de l'Innovation) from 1982 to 2006, he became professor at Sciences Po Paris (2006–2017), where he was the scientific director of the Sciences Po Medialab. He retired from several university activities in 2017. He was also a Centennial Professor at the London School of Economics. Latour is best known for his books We Have Never Been Modern (1991; English translation, 1993), Laboratory Life (with Steve Woolgar, 1979) and Science in Action (1987). Although his studies of scientific practice were at one time associated with social constructionist approaches to the philosophy of science, Latour diverged significantly from such approaches. Representing the Digital Humanities Community: Unveiling The Social Network Visualization of an International Conference

This paper deals with the sense of represent- ing both a new domain as Digital Humanities and its community. Based on a case study, where a set of visualizations was used to represent the community attending the international Digital Humanities conference of 2014 in Lausanne, Switzerland, the meaning of representing a community is investigated in the light of the theories of three acknowledged authors, namely Charles Sanders Peirce for his notion of the interpretant, Ludwig Wittgenstein for his insights on the use of language, and finally Bruno Latour for his ideas of representing politics. There results a proposal to designing and interpreting social network visualizations in a more thoughtful way, while remaining aware of the relation between objects in the real world and their visualizations. As this type of work pertains to a wider scope, we propose bringing a theoretical framework to a young domain such as data visualization.

Le monde virtuel de Second Life peut être considéré comme un véritable terrain d’expérimentation en ligne qui permet de concevoir et de tester des méthodes de recherche. Cet article revient sur la genèse d’un outil de tracking, la Magic Ring, développé dans le cadre d’une recherche sur les pratiques spatiales des avatars dans Second Life. L’auteur détaille le raisonnement théorique et méthodologique ayant mené à la conception de cet outil qui collecte des millions de données très précises, pour un large échantillon de sujets. Ces données sont qualifiées de données « quali-quantitatives ». L’auteur explique alors que l’analyse de ces données nous invite à revisiter la théorie sociale de Gabriel Tarde, récemment reprise par Bruno Latour (Latour et al., 2013), depuis que certains logiciels permettent de les visualiser et de naviguer parmi elles. Il revient enfin sur les limites rencontrées lors du projet Magic Ring.
