COM-406: Foundations of Data ScienceWe discuss a set of topics that are important for the understanding of modern data science but that are typically not taught in an introductory ML course. In particular we discuss fundamental ideas and techniques that come from probability, information theory as well as signal processing.
BIO-369: Randomness and information in biological dataBiology is becoming more and more a data science, as illustrated by the explosion of available genome sequences. This course aims to show how we can make sense of such data and harness it in order to understand biological processes in a quantitative way.
CS-401: Applied data analysisThis course teaches the basic techniques, methodologies, and practical skills required to draw meaningful insights from a variety of data, with the help of the most acclaimed software tools in the data science world (pandas, scikit-learn, Spark, etc.)
CS-423: Distributed information systemsThis course introduces the key concepts and algorithms from the areas of information retrieval, data mining and knowledge bases, which constitute the foundations of today's Web-based distributed information systems.
PHYS-435: Statistical physics IIIThis course introduces statistical field theory, and uses concepts related to phase transitions to discuss a variety of complex systems (random walks and polymers, disordered systems, combinatorial optimisation, information theory and error correcting codes).
COM-622: Topics in information-theoretic cryptographyInformation-theoretic methods and their application to secrecy & privacy. Perfect information-theoretic secrecy. Randomness extraction & privacy amplification. Secret key generation from common randomness. Measures of information leakage incl. differential privacy, perfect privacy, & mutual info.
EE-311: Fundamentals of machine learningCe cours présente une vue générale des techniques d'apprentissage automatique, passant en revue les algorithmes, le formalisme théorique et les protocoles expérimentaux.
EE-543: Advanced wireless receiversStudents extend their knowledge on wireless communication systems to spread-spectrum communication and to multi-antenna systems. They also learn about the basic information theoretic concepts, about channel coding, and bit-interleaved coded modulation.
