In 1971 a group of environmental activists set sail from Canada to protest nuclear testing. With this journey the organization Greenpeace was born. 50 years old this year, Greenpeace and other organizations like it have seen environmental concerns move from the fringe to the mainstream, and eventually evolve into climate change activism. In 2009, at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, more than forty thousand people marched for a Global Agreement on Climate Change. Spontaneous rallies and demonstrations demanding immediate climate action took place around the globe, increasing over the last decades. Beginning in 2018 ‘Fridays For Future’ are days where millions of school students boycott schools on Friday and participate in climate change activism. Civil disobedience movements like Extinction Rebellion and Ende Gelände have also started to gain significant attention and support. On September 23, 2019, world leaders in New York city witnessed possibly the most powerful speech in the last decade when Greta Thunberg declared that they have failed to address climate change.

Social media have become one of the key platforms to support the debate on climate change. In particular, Twitter allows easy information dissemination when running environmental campaigns. Yet, the dynamics of these campaigns on social platforms still remain largely unexplored. In this paper, we study the success factors enabling online petitions to attain their required number of signatures. We present an analysis of e-petitions and identify how their number of users, tweets and retweets correlate with their success. In addition, we show that environmental petitions are actively promoted by popular public campaigns on Twitter. Finally, we present an annotated corpus of petitions posted by environmental campaigns together with their corresponding tweets to enable further exploration.

Environmental concern requires manufacturers to extend the domain of their control and responsibility across the product's life cycle. Much of the research has concentrated on assessment of environmental performance through the application of the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) framework that provides a technical methodology to help identification of environmental impacts of product systems. However, the current LCA framework does not incorporate dynamic and diverse characteristics of manufacturing processes. As a result, the LCA's referential data will largely deviate from the real ones to an extent that the purpose of LCA is not meaningful. In other words, the current and fixed referential data-based method is not suitable to specify the impact categories related to manufacturing processes. From the perspective of decision making related with environmental impact during manufacturing, the current LCA method carried out in the off-line is hard to apply. As a result, performance index, such as greenability, a major performance index for environment conscious manufacturing cannot be implemented in the real practice. This paper presents the development of a framework (called process-oriented LCA) to realize environmental conscious manufacturing incorporating both greenability and productivity. To show the applicability and validity of this framework, experiments and analysis have been conducted and a prototype system has been implemented for a turning machining process.
