Assessing the Impact of Transit Signal Priority Strategies on a Network

This research presents the implementation of two different transit signal priority strategies and assesses their impact on the whole network through a bi-modal three-dimensional Macroscopic Fundamental Diagram. The first TSP strategy is the green extension, which is implemented using the microscopic simulation software AIMSUN. Initially, activated in a single intersection, its impact is positive as it reduces the total passenger delay of the intersection in comparison with the base-case scenario. Afterwards, it is implemented on a few intersections, then on multiple arterials, and its impact is assessed by generating a 3D-passenger and vehicle MFD. On multiple arterials, the green extension performs better than the base case scenario as it increases the passenger flow. The second TSP strategy implemented is a person-based traffic-responsive signal control system, which aims to reduce the total passenger delay in a single intersection by accounting for the passenger occupancy of autos and transit vehicles, while prioritizing transit vehicles. This system was first implemented in a single intersection, and then on 4 intersections. Its efficiency was compared with the base-case scenario and with the active TSP strategy. The person-based TSP proved its efficiency as it performed better than both the base case scenario and the green extension. In fact, the person-based TSP allows more autos and transit vehicles to be served in the network and also achieves higher values of passenger flow.

Today's airports aren't anymore pure interfaces between ground and air. Since several years they are going through an intense development. Their ground and air accessibility attracts real estate development and (re-) links the region it is implemented in. The provoked economical development around the airport has impact on its catchment area and vice versa. The “EuroAirport Basel Mulhouse Freiburg” consists in an important regional airport, connecting its catchment area with Europe and is located at the borders of three countries. The present situation doesn't include any rail connection even though tracks pass by about a kilometer from the terminal. The only access is by road and air traffic. My project aims at an improved accessibility of the EuroAirport - connecting different scales at one place. This new DENSIFIED MODAL INTERCHANGE includes a reorganization of the terminal layout. The old terminal (1970) is demolished and this new void within the existing terminal (20012 - 2005) marks the interconnected modes of transportation and lets the passengers experience their flows. The project adds a high speed train (HST) station and a Ringbahn stop connecting the site to the bigger region and the city of Basel. The train station takes advantage of its location at the crossing of important European HST axes and allows the site to keep the amount of passengers even when its short haul flights will be substituted to HST to free up air space for long haul flights in the coming future.

The advent of shared-economy and smartphones made on-demand transportation services possible, which created additional opportunities, but also more complexity to urban mobility. Companies that offer these services are called Transportation Network Companies (TNCs) due to their internet-based nature. Although ride-sourcing is the most notorious service TNCs provide, little is known about to what degree its operations can interfere in traffic conditions, while replacing other transportation modes, or when a large number of idle vehicles is cruising for passengers. We experimentally analyze the efficiency of TNCs using taxi trip data from a Chinese megacity and an agent-based simulation with a trip-based MFD model for determining the speed. We investigate the effect of expanding fleet sizes for TNCs, passengers’ inclination towards sharing rides, and strategies to alleviate urban congestion. We observe that, although a larger fleet size reduces waiting time, it also intensifies congestion, which, in turn, prolongs the total travel time. Such congestion effect is so significant that it is nearly insensitive to passengers’ willingness to share and flexible supply. Finally, parking management strategies can prevent idle vehicles from cruising without assigned passengers, mitigating the negative impacts of ride-sourcing over congestion, and improving the service quality.
