GomelGomel or Homiel (Гомель, ˈɡomjɪlj, ˈɣomjelj) is a city in Belarus. It serves as the administrative centre of Gomel Region and Gomel District, though it is administratively separated from the district. As of 2023, it is the second-largest city in Belarus with 501,802 inhabitants. There are at least six narratives of the origin of the city's name. The most plausible is that the name is derived from the name of the stream Homeyuk, which flowed into the river Sozh near the foot of the hill where the first settlement was founded.
BryanskBryansk (Брянск, brjansk) is a city and the administrative center of Bryansk Oblast, Russia, situated on the River Desna, southwest of Moscow. PolotskPolotsk or Polatsk (Полоцк; Polack) is a historical city in Belarus, situated on the Dvina River. It serves as the administrative center of Polotsk District in Vitebsk Region. Its population is more than 80,000 people. It is served by Polotsk Airport and Borovitsy air base. The Old East Slavic name, Polotesk, derives from the Polota river, which flows into the neighboring Western Dvina. The Vikings rendered that name as Palteskja. Lake Babyna Polotsk is one of the earliest mentioned cities of the Eastern Slavs.
