Industrially, it is used as a solvent for the manufacture of pharmaceuticals and photographic film. Acetonitrile is a common two-carbon building block in organic synthesis of many useful chemicals, including acetamidine hydrochloride, thiamine, and α-napthaleneacetic acid.
