Situé sur les Côtes-de-Montbenon à Lausanne, ce bâtiment hybride entre un studio et une salle de cinéma a pour ambition d'un point de vue urbain d'offrir de nouvelles connexions, plus directes, plus riches et plus douces, entre les deux niveaux de la ville qui l'enserrent de part et d'autre: le plateau de Montbenon et le quartier du Flon. Les caractéristiques de chacun de ces univers se retrouvent dans le bâtiment et se fondent les unes dans les autres pour créer une transition. A l'intérieur, un programme professionnel, fait de stations de tournage, mixage, montage, de loges et d'entrepôts, se marie à un programme public, composé d'un bar, d'un café et de terrasses. A l'intersection de ces deux entités programmatiques se trouve la grande salle, qui se mue à volonté pour servir les besoins d'un tournage, d'une projection cinématographique ou de toute autre fonction intermédiaire réunissant spectacle et public. Contrairement à la plupart des salles et studios de cinéma qui sont souvent des boîtes très fermées, ce projet cherche à instaurer une certaine perméabilité au travers de membranes plus ou moins transparentes, offrant ainsi davantage de perspectives et de possibilités. La configuration des espaces est telle que, lors d'une séance de cinéma, des reflets du film projeté viennent animer le bar et, vus depuis l'extérieur, créent l'effet publicitaire. La façade révèle alors sa vraie nature en se transformant, une fois la nuit tombée, en lanterne colorée.

Somewhere around the late 60's, the architectural studio underwent a 'conceptual' turn which, some fifty years later, would unknowingly become the model for the now fashionable 'start-up', 'business incubator' and 'think-tank' spaces that have sprung up from the venture capital and crowdfunding economies. This article highlights five of the features of the post 60's architectural studio environment, which make it into a specific kind of creative generator: discipline, social interaction, notation, multi-media and critique. Architects have traditionally played down the disciplinary know how and compound expertise that they have mastered for a long time, and that has shaped the work environment of the studio. With the discovery of their creative bubble by more PR-savvy branches of the economy, architects need to wake up and lay claim to the conceptual tools that they have developed over many decades. False modesty should no longer parade as a virtue.

Code and its image: the functions of text and visualisation in a code-based design studio

Traditionally, design learning in the architecture studio has taken place through a combination of individual work and joint projects. The introduction of code-based design practices in the design studio has altered this balance, introducing new models of joint authorship and new ways for individuals to contribute to co-authored projects. This paper presents a case study describing four design studios in a higher education setting that used code as a tool for generating architectural geometry. The format of the studios encouraged the students to reflect critically on their role as authors and to creatively address the multiple opportunities for shared authorship available with code-based production. The research question addressed in this study involved the role of code-based practices in altering the model of architectural education in the design studio, in particular the role of visual representations of a code-based design process in the production of shared knowledge.
