Grey (more common in Commonwealth English) or gray (more common in American English) is an intermediate color between black and white. It is a neutral or achromatic color, meaning literally that it is "without color", because it can be composed of black and white. It is the color of a cloud-covered sky, of ash and of lead. The first recorded use of grey as a color name in the English language was in 700 CE. Grey is the dominant spelling in European and Commonwealth English, while gray is more common in American English; however, both spellings are valid in both varieties of English. In Europe and North America, surveys show that grey is the color most commonly associated with neutrality, conformity, boredom, uncertainty, old age, indifference, and modesty. Only one percent of respondents chose it as their favorite color. Guidés par des préoccupations architecturales, environnementales, politiques, sociales et économiques nous porterons plus particulièrement notre regard, ce semestre, sur les relations complexes qui s'établissent entre le naturel et l’urbain, le « Green and Grey ». Nous questionnerons par le projet d'architecture la relation entre la nature et l’urbain dans la ville contemporaine. Une première phase de travail permettra de relever dans une métropole contemporaine la relation intime et nécessaire qu’entretiennent la ville et la nature et ceci afin de la définir. Dans une deuxième étape, le travail du projet permettra de construire une sensation qui rende présent cette nature dans l’urbain dense; à rendre sensible à travers une pensée rationnelle les formes poétiques qui peuvent émerger d’une observation du naturel en ville comme source de plaisir, de sens et d’émotions, à prendre comme thème un espace environnemental et non l’environnement immédiat, à prendre appui sur la notion de climat, non pas générique mais local.

Distribution of the monocarboxylate transporter MCT2 in human cerebral cortex: an immunohistochemical study

The monocarboxylate transporter MCT2 belongs to a large family of membrane proteins involved in the transport of lactate, pyruvate and ketone bodies. Although its expression in rodent brain has been well documented, the presence of MCT2 in the human brain has been questioned on the basis of low mRNA abundance. In this study, the distribution of the monocarboxylate transporter MCT2 has been investigated in the cortex of normal adult human brain using an immunohistochemical approach. Widespread neuropil staining in all cortical layers was observed by light microscopy. Such a distribution was very similar in three different cortical areas investigated. At the cellular level, the expression of MCT2 could be observed in a large number of neurons, in fibers both in grey and white matter, as well as in some astrocytes, mostly localized in layer I and in the white matter. Double staining experiments combined with confocal microscopy confirmed the neuronal expression but also suggested a preferential postsynaptic localization of synaptic MCT2 expression. A few astrocytes in the grey matter appeared to exhibit MCT2 labelling but at low levels. Electron microscopy revealed strong MCT2 expression at asymmetric synapses in the postsynaptic density and also within the spine head but not in the presynaptic terminal. These data not only demonstrate neuronal MCT2 expression in human, but since a portion of it exhibits a distinct synaptic localization, it further supports a putative role for MCT2 in adjustment of energy supply to levels of activity.

Whole genome grey and white matter DNA methylation profiles in dorsolateral prefrontal cortex

The brain's neocortex is anatomically organized into grey and white matter, which are mainly composed by neuronal and glial cells, respectively. The neocortex can be further divided in different Brodmann areas according to their cytoarchitectural organization, which are associated with distinct cortical functions. There is increasing evidence that brain development and function are governed by epigenetic processes, yet their contribution to the functional organization of the neocortex remains incompletely understood. Herein, we determined the DNA methylation patterns of grey and white matter of dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (Brodmann area 9), an important region for higher cognitive skills that is particularly affected in various neurological diseases. For avoiding interindividual differences, we analyzed white and grey matter from the same donor using whole genome bisulfite sequencing, and for validating their biological significance, we used Infinium HumanMethylation450 BeadChip and pyrosequencing in ten and twenty independent samples, respectively. The combination of these analysis indicated robust grey-white matter differences in DNA methylation. What is more, cell type-specific markers were enriched among the most differentially methylated genes. Interestingly, we also found an outstanding number of grey-white matter differentially methylated genes that have previously been associated with Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Huntington's disease, as well as Multiple and Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The data presented here thus constitute an important resource for future studies not only to gain insight into brain regional as well as grey and white matter differences, but also to unmask epigenetic alterations that might underlie neurological and neurodegenerative diseases.
