Microsoft PowerPoint

Microsoft PowerPoint is a presentation program, created by Robert Gaskins and Dennis Austin at a software company named Forethought, Inc. It was released on April 20, 1987, initially for Macintosh computers only. Microsoft acquired PowerPoint for about $14 million three months after it appeared. This was Microsoft's first significant acquisition, and Microsoft set up a new business unit for PowerPoint in Silicon Valley where Forethought had been located. PowerPoint became a component of the Microsoft Office suite, first offered in 1989 for Macintosh and in 1990 for Windows, which bundled several Microsoft apps. Beginning with PowerPoint 4.0 (1994), PowerPoint was integrated into Microsoft Office development, and adopted shared common components and a converged user interface. The Smart Transformer, a solid-state transformer with control and communication functionalities, can be the ideal solution for integrating storage into the grid. By leveraging the knowledge of the grid state of distribution grids thanks to smart meters and/or dedicated remote terminal units, in the paper, it is proposed a control strategy for a MV/LV smart transformer (ST) with integrated storage to achieve: i) dispatched-by-design operation of the LV network by controlling the ST active power set-point on the MV power converter, and ii) voltage regulation of both MV and LV networks by controlling the reactive power injections of both LV and MV converter. The former is achieved by dispatching the active power flow of the LV network according to a profile established the day before the operation, called \emph{dispatch plan}, with the objective of reducing the amount of regulating power required to operate the grid. It is based on the use of forecast to compute a dispatch plan, and a tracking problem to compensate in real-time the mismatch between realization and dispatch plan by taking advantage of the storage capacity. The latter is achieved by using sensitivity coefficients, which are calculated from the state of the grid and integrating the information on the network topology. The problem formulation is given in the paper, and the proof-of-concept is shown by simulation using the IEEE 34 nodes test feeder and the CIGRE Low Voltage reference network.

Optimized short-circuit current mismatch in multi-junction solar cells

Multi-junction photovoltaic devices include two or more component sub-cells which are electrically interconnected in series. At any power point, the current output of the total device is limited by the sub-cell with the smallest current density. Therefore, the maximum efficiency is reached when the sub-cells have equal current densities at their respective maximum power points. In this case the sub-cells are so called "power matched". We report an experimental procedure in which the current voltage characteristics of tandem solar cells can be measured under various irradiance spectra, i.e. under various shortcircuit current matching conditions. This permits the probing of the optimized short circuit current mismatch, where the sub-cells are power matched, which is essential to define design rules for the tandem stack. The method applies well to devices where one of the sub-cells is metastable. We show that, in the case of thin-film silicon tandem cells, the optimum mismatch changes significantly after light induced degradation. Consequently, the degradation factor of such devices is shown to depend not only on material quality but also on the initial short circuit current matching. This experiment also provides relative quantification of the fill factors of each sub-cell. Our example suggests that a high bottom cell deposition rate can be detrimental to the fill factor of the top cell in the case of thin-film silicon tandem cells deposited in superstrate configuration. English Spoken Term Detection in Multilingual Recordings

This paper investigates the automatic detection of English spoken terms in a multi-language scenario over real lecture recordings. Spoken Term Detection (STD) is based on an LVCSR where the output is represented in the form of word lattices. The lattices are then used to search the required terms. Processed lectures are mainly composed of English, French and Italian recordings where the language can also change within one recording. Therefore, the English STD system uses an Out-Of-Language (OOL) detection module to filter out non-English input segments. OOL detection is evaluated w.r.t. various confidence measures estimated from word lattices. Experimental studies of OOL detection followed by English STD are performed on several hours of multilingual recordings. Significant improvement of OOL+STD over a stand-alone STD system is achieved (relatively more than 50% in EER). Finally, an additional modality (text slides in the form of PowerPoint presentations) is exploited to improve STD.
