Optimization Principles

This lecture introduces the principles of optimization and operations research, covering topics such as linear optimization, the simplex algorithm, networks, transhipment, shortest paths, duality, and integer optimization. The course structure includes self-learning weeks with reading, videos, and exercises, followed by interactive sessions. Concrete research examples in the Transport and Mobility Laboratory at EPFL are discussed, including applications in airlines, port operations, urban traffic, vehicle routing, train timetables, electric buses, and modular aircraft. The textbook 'Optimization: Principles and Algorithms' by Michel Bierlaire is recommended for the course.
