This lecture introduces the concept of asylum as a formal regime of international legal protection for specific categories of vulnerable migrants, supervised by the UNHCR. It explains the treaty rules, the distinction between asylum-seekers and irregular migrants, and the challenges faced in the current migration landscape. The lecture also covers the concept of irregular migration, the global refugee crisis, and the European migrant crisis of 2015-2016.
