This lecture covers materials design with examples from soft matter, focusing on self-assembly of macromolecules, sampling of rare events and free energy, phase transitions, protein folding, and drug design. It also discusses the self-assembly of graphitic nanotubes from Hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (hbc) with various morphologies, including a discrete nanotubular object with a 14nm wide open hollow space. The lecture explores the amphiphilic hbc self-assembly process, the structure of the nanotubes, and their electrical conductivity upon oxidation. Additionally, it touches on coarse-grain mapping of molecules and features a Zen master's staff calligraphy related to students.
