African Cities: Informal Settlements Restructuring

This lecture discusses the restructuring of the informal settlement of El Mina in Nouakchott, focusing on the challenges faced by the 50,000 inhabitants living in precarious conditions. It covers the involvement of various stakeholders such as the government, World Bank, and local authorities, as well as the unique institutional framework established for the project. The lecture also delves into the strategic approach taken, emphasizing the importance of not creating overly attractive living conditions and providing direct access to land ownership.
