This lecture presents the XFLEX HYDRO Project led by EPFL, focusing on enhancing hydropower flexibility to support the power system's needs in the face of increasing energy from variable sources. The project aims to maximize hydro electrical technology performance, including variable speed improvements and battery utilization, to ensure readiness for power system transitions. Divided into three phases - innovation, demonstration, and deployment - the project has already shown significant progress in innovation activities and stakeholder engagement. The ultimate goal is to produce a white paper and roadmap for wider adoption of the technologies in the European hydropower sector, influencing policy and market dynamics.
