This lecture covers the installation process of GNU Octave 3.8.0, a high-level interpreted language for numerical computations. It provides capabilities for solving linear and nonlinear problems, extensive graphics for data visualization, and is easily portable. The lecture explains the steps necessary to install Octave, its interactive command line interface, and its similarity to Matlab. It also discusses the GNU General Public License under which Octave is distributed, along with the libraries and utilities required for its functioning.
