This lecture introduces the fundamentals of computational cell biology, focusing on modeling cellular complexity arising from molecular interactions. Topics include the design principles of artificial machines versus cells, the cost and challenges of atomistic molecular dynamics simulations, and the quantitative description of a cell. The course aims to develop skills in constructing mathematical models, solving equations, and simulating cellular behavior. Students will explore the history of cell biology, the diversity of cell structures, and the unique properties of lipid membranes. Emphasis is placed on understanding the differences between the human and cellular scales, the application of Newton's laws in cellular contexts, and the importance of measuring cellular properties for quantitative analysis.
