This lecture discusses the significant energy consumption of the internet and network infrastructure, emphasizing the challenges posed by video streaming and cloud computing. The instructor presents an ensemble approach to dynamically match resources to the load, ensuring energy-proportional traffic routing. Various related works and the need for minimizing recomputation to avoid energy waste and congestion are explored. The lecture delves into the implementation of Service-Level Objectives, such as energy-aware traffic engineering and energy-proportional routing table computation. Through evaluations and live experiments, the responsiveness, stability, and impact on application performance of the proposed solutions are demonstrated, highlighting the benefits of the hybrid offline/online approach for optimal and scalable traffic management.
