Daniele Mari was born in Milan in 1961, After a scientific high school degree obatained in Italy Daniele Mari joins EPFL in 1980 and graduates in Physics in 1986. In 1991, he obtains the Ph.D. from the same institution working in the field of metal-ceramic composites. From 1992 to 1993 he continues his research as a post-doc at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a work on shape-memory alloys. In 1993, he joins the company Amysa Yverdon SA (Switzerland) as director of Research and Development and creates ACME (Advanced Composite & Microwave Engineering) with activities in the fields of the electromagnetic heating and materials science. In parallel with his industrial activities, D. Mari has supervised different research projects in materials science at the EPFL. In 2004 he joins the Laboratoire de Physique de la Matière Complexe to develop mechanical spectroscopy in the field of hard materials and steels. He is appointed MER in 2012. Since then he is responsible for the Physics Laboratories (for student training) and Auditoriums. Since 2013 D. Mari is the Deputy Director of the Physics School.

A Finite Element Model is developed to represent the mechanical behavior of WC-10 wt.% Co in compression tests. In this research, realistic three-dimensional model is obtained by slicing a sample by Focused Ion Beam and reconstituting it, resulting in two interpenetrated phases. The brittle WC phase is defined as elastic. The Co phase includes plasticity. The post sintering cooling is simulated, followed by a loading-unloading compression cycle. The results are then compared with experimental data obtained by neutron diffraction. The residual thermal stresses in both phases are in good agreement with the data obtained by neutron diffraction, featuring high tensile stress in the Co phase and moderate compressive stress in the WC phase. The elastic strain in the Co phase shows a good agreement in the loading cycle, but presents some differences in the unloading cycle. The plastic model applied to the Co phase is then modified to improve the accuracy of the simulation, showing a final good agreement with the experiment.

Relaxation time shift of Cobalt related internal friction peak in WC-Co cemented carbide

Cemented carbides are widely used in the cutting tools industry for their mechanical properties. They are composite materials made of hard tungsten carbide grains jointed together by a ductile cobalt binder. Due to the extreme conditions of use of the tools, understanding the evolution of the microstructure of the two phases is essential. This evolution can be followed by Mechanical Spectroscopy, either as a function of the temperature, or of the frequency. A general overview of the spectrum reveals three mechanical loss peaks. The second peak presents a transition in its Arrhenius plot at 1140 K, when measured in isothermal fre-quency scans. The temperature of this transition corresponds with the Curie temperature of the cobalt in WC-Co. However, temperature scans do not reveal any shift in the Arrhenius plot. This result shows how the presence of a phase transition leads to the measurement of apparent activation energies when a relaxation peak is measured in out-of-equilibrium conditions. Strain glass transition of cobalt phase in a cemented carbide

Cemented carbides are hard materials used for the fabrication of cutting tools. They consist of hard micron or sub-micron carbide grains held together in a matrix of a tough metallic binder such as cobalt. The understanding and control of cobalt characteristics are of crucial importance to improve the mechanical properties of WC-Co cemented carbide materials. Indeed, cobalt controls the toughness of the material and its properties seem to condition the durability of cemented carbides. At low temperature, pure cobalt is normally found in hcp structure, while above 426 degrees C (700 K) it changes to fcc crystalline structure. Remarkably, in cemented carbides, cobalt appears even at low temperature as fcc, otherwise as a mixture of fcc and hcp. It is unsure if these crystal structures are due to the presence of internal stresses or due to W and C soluted atoms. However, this paper demonstrates that cobalt in WC-10wt.%Co cemented carbide may show some characteristics of a glass transition at around 669 degrees C (942 K) in the 1 Hz frequency range, inducing a glassy state to cobalt, which is of great interest from a fundamental point of view, however challenging to control in materials technology.
