Gil Regev joined EPFL in 1997 as Senior Researcher after 9 years at Logitech Switzerland and USA. Gil obtained his Ph.D. in Communication Systems in 2003. Since 2008 Gil works both at EPFL and Itecor

In this paper, we present a problem structuring method in business and IT analysis illustrated with an example. The project describes an IT consulting case done for a Swiss medical society faced with a problem of change management and digital transformation. We show business analysis techniques of modelling actors’ behaviour, motivation, and information exchanged between them. We model business and IT services and structure case information in order to design a solution to the problem and its implementation requirements. We highlight how accommodation of different viewpoints enables business and IT alignment and removes hindrances to innovation.

Using Enterprise Models to Explain and Discuss Autopoiesis and Homeostasis in Socio-technical Systems

The article links two seemingly different fundamental theoretical concepts of autopoiesis and homeostasis and tries to apply them to the realm of socio-technical systems with the use of the Fractal Enterprise Model (FEM). Autopoiesis is the property of a system that constantly reproduces itself. Homeostasis describes a way a complex system constantly maintains its identity while adapting to changes in its internal and external environment. To be able to use FEM for this task, the original version of FEM has been extended by adding special elements for representing the system's context – part of the environment to which the system is structurally coupled. The approach taken in this article differs from other works in the same field in having the focus on the “body” (concrete elements being reproduced) of the socio-technical system, as well as on identifying concrete processes that reproduce the system, and demonstrating concrete ways of how a specific system adapts or can adapt to the perturbations in the environment (i.e. internal and external disturbances that affect the system).

Comparison of Two Value-Modeling Methods: e3 value and SEAM

In the last few decades, several value-modeling methods have emerged in requirements engineering for IS research. We compare two value-modeling methods, e3value and SEAM. We illustrate their use with an example of the exchange of the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) on music. In the process, we propose a comparison framework. The results of our study show that e3value and SEAM are similar value-modeling techniques: both model services in networked systems and focus on value exchanges. They differ, however, in the way value is conceptualized: the market viability of the service system in e3value versus the subjective value and lack of market profitability analysis in SEAM. e3value shows how value flows from one actor to another, whereas SEAM shows the relative importance of different value propositions and how they are constructed by the service network. These results can be used by modelers to select a value-modeling method for their purposes by proposing explicit selection criteria. The comparison framework, which is in its early stages of development, can be used to compare other modeling methods.
