Bixio Rimoldi

Bixio Rimoldi received the Dipl. El.-Ing degree as well as the Dr. ès Sciences degree from the ETHZ, Switzerland. Since 1997, he holds a full professor position at the School of Computer and Communication Sciences at EPFL and he is the director of EPFL's Mobile Communications Laboratory (LCM). Prior to joining EPFL, he was in the faculty of the Electrical Engineering department of Washington University.

In 1993, he received a US National Science Foundation Young Investigator Award. In 2000, he was elected to the grade of Fellow of the IEEE. During the period 2002-2009 he has been on the Board of Governors of the IEEE Information Theory Society, where he served in several offices including President. He was co-chairman with Bruce Hajek of the 1995 IEEE Information Theory Workshop on Information Theory, Multiple Access, and Queueing (St Louis, MO), and co-chairman with Jim Massey of the 2002 IEEE International Symposium in Information Theory (Lausanne, Switzerland). He has been a member of the editorial board of "Foundations and Trends on Communications and Information Theory," and was an editor of the European Transactions on Telecommunications. During 2005 and 2006 he was the Director of EPFL's Bachelor program in Communication Systems.

His interests are in various aspects of digital communications, information theory, and software-defined radio.

This paper reports experimental results on self-organizing wireless networks carried by small flying robots. Flying ad hoc networks (FANETs) composed of small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are flexible, inexpensive and fast to deploy. This makes them a very attractive technology for many civilian and military applications. Due to the high mobility of the nodes, maintaining a communication link between the UAVs is a challenging task. The topology of these networks is more dynamic than that of typical mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) and of typical vehicle ad hoc networks (VANETs). As a consequence, the existing routing protocols designed for MANETs partly fail in tracking network topology changes. In this work, we compare two different routing algorithms for ad hoc networks: optimized link-state routing (OLSR), and predictive-OLSR (P-OLSR). The latter is an OLSR extension that we designed for FANETs; it takes advantage of the GPS information available on board. To the best of our knowledge, P-OLSR is currently the only FANET-specific routing technique that has an available Linux implementation. We present results obtained by both Media Access Control (MAC) layer emulations and real-world experiments. In the experiments, we used a testbed composed of two autonomous fixed-wing UAVs and a node on the ground. Our experiments evaluate the link performance and the communication range, as well as the routing performance. Our emulation and experimental results show that P-OLSR significantly outperforms OLSR in routing in the presence of frequent network topology changes.

HMM-Based Error Correction Mechanism for Five-Key Chording Keyboards

As different text input devices lead to different typing error patterns, considering the device characteristics when designing an error correction mechanism can lead to significantly improved results. In this paper, we propose and evaluate a spelling correction algorithm based on Hidden Markov Models. It is designed for a five-key chording keyboard and uses the probabilities that one character is typed for another, named confusion probabilities. For the used evaluation text, the proposed algorithm reduces the error rate from 10.11% to 1.27%. In comparison, MsWord and iSpell reduce the error rate to 4.75% and 6.69%, respectively.

In this paper, we propose and evaluate a spelling algorithm specifically designed for a five-key chording keyboard. It is based on the maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) criterion, taking into account a dictionary model and the probability that one character is typed for another. These probabilities are determined experimentally. For the considered evaluation text, the proposed method reduced the error rate from 10.11% to 2.17%. As comparison, MsWord and iSpell reduced the error rate to 5.15% and 6.69%, respectively.
