Thomas Lochmatter

After receiving a Master in "Digital Communication Systems and Technology" from Chalmers University of Technology (CTH, Sweden) in 2005 and a Master in "Communication System" from the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL, Switzerland) in 2006, Thomas Lochmatter joined the Distributed Intelligent Systems and Algorithms Laboratory at EPFL, where he carried out a PhD thesis in the area of mobile robotics and odor source localization.

Thomas is a co-founder of three companies in the field of educational software and IT services, and was involved in a number of projects in these areas. He is currently working on projects related to security and privacy in information technology.

A computer implemented method for encrypting one or more files and wrapping them in an HTML document. The HTML document contains the encrypted files, the necessary code to decrypt the files, as well as user interface code to receive a passphrase input from a user. The HTML document can be opened using any modern web browser, to obtain the original files using the same passphrase with which the encryption was performed. This offers a convenient way of sharing encrypted files via email or cloud file sharing services using a platform independent file format (without having to install any additional software).

A Plume Tracking Algorithm Based on Crosswind Formations

We introduce a plume tracking algorithm based on robot formations. The algorithm is inherently designed for multi-robot systems, and requires at least two robots to collaborate. The robots try to keep themselves centered around the plume while moving upwind towards the source, and share their odor concentration and wind direction measurements with each other. In addition, robots know the relative poses of other team members. Systematic experiments with up to 5 real robots in a wind tunnel show that the robots achieve close-to-optimal performance in our scenario, and by far outperform previous approaches. The performance gain is attributed to the fact that robots continuously share information about the plume (odor concentration, wind direction) without spatially competing for acquiring it.

Wireless GPS-based phase-locked synchronization system for outdoor environment

Synchronization of data coming from different sources is of high importance in biomechanics to ensure reliable analyses. This synchronization can either be performed through hardware to obtain perfect matching of data, or post-processed digitally. Hardware synchronization can be achieved using trigger cables connecting different devices in many situations; however, this is often impractical, and sometimes impossible in outdoors situations. The aim of this paper is to describe a wireless system for outdoor use, allowing synchronization of different types of - potentially embedded and moving - devices. In this system, each synchronization device is composed of: (i) a GPS receiver (used as time reference), (ii) a radio transmitter, and (iii) a microcontroller. These components are used to provide synchronized trigger signals at the desired frequency to the measurement device connected. The synchronization devices communicate wirelessly, are very lightweight, battery-operated and thus very easy to set up. They are adaptable to every measurement device equipped with either trigger input or recording channel. The accuracy of the system was validated using an oscilloscope.
