The origin of early age expansions induced in cementitious materials containing shrinkage reducing admixtures

Studies on the early-age shrinkage behavior of cement pastes, mortars, and concretes containing shrinkage reducing admixtures (SRAs) have indicated these mixtures frequently exhibit an expansion shortly after setting. While the magnitude of the expansion has been noted to be a function of the chemistry of the cement and the admixture dosage: the cause of the expansion is not clearly understood. This investigation uses measurements of autogenous deformation, X-ray diffraction, pore solution analysis, thermogravimetry, and scanning electron microscopy to study the early-age properties and describe the mechanism of the expansion in OPC pastes made with and without SRA. The composition of the pore solution indicates that the presence of the SRA increases the portlandite oversaturation level in solution which can result in higher crystallization stresses which could lead to an expansion. Synthesis, crystal growth and physical properties of the frustrated spin ladder material BiCu2PO6

In recent years quantum antiferromagnets with an intrinsically disordered (“spin liquid”) ground state and an energy gap in the spin excitation spectrum have received a great deal of attention. In search for new experimental realizations of spin-ladder and related models, we have embarked upon a new interesting family of low-dimensional materials with the general formula BiCu2AO6 (A = P, V and As). Among them, BiCu2PO6 shows a structure where Cu spins appear to form a two-leg zigzag ladder, which is believed to be a valuable model of a quantum magnet. However, for detailed studies of quantum magnetism, single crystals are indispensible. Therefore, in this thesis, synthesis and characterization of the newly-discovered spin ladder material BiCu2PO6 (BCPO) and its derivatives in the form of powder and single crystal are presented. Polycrystalline samples of Bi(Cu1-xZnx)2PO6 (x= 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.04, 0.05 and 1), Bi1-y(Ca, Sr, La )yCu2PO6 (y = 0.15, 0.5 and 1) and BiCu2(P1-zVz)O6 (z = 1) were synthesized in this work. The solid state synthesis reactions, phase purity and thermal properties of the samples, substitution solubility, and preliminary magnetic susceptibility have been studied by thermal analysis (TG-DTA), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) as well as DC magnetization measurements, respectively. The BiCu2PO6 structure shows a remarkable chemical flexibility and interesting substitution effects. For detailed studies of the magnetic properties, well characterized large single crystals are indispensable. Thus in this thesis, a number of single crystal growth experiments have been performed using the Travelling Solvent Floating Zone method (TSFZ). Under the elaborated crystal growth conditions (growth rate of ~1 mm/h, gas mixture of 20% O2 in Argon, total 3 pressure (6~6.5 bar), high quality cm -size single crystals of Bi(Cu1-xZnx)2PO6 (x = 0, 0.01, 0.03, 0.05) have been successfully grown for the first time. For these crystals phase purity, crystal morphology/orientation, defect density, chemical composition distribution, crystal structure (room temperature and 1.5 K) and single crystal quality were thoroughly studied based on X-ray and neutron powder diffraction, optical and scanning electron microscopy, X-ray/neutron Laue diffraction, ICP-OES/X-ray fluorescence and two-axis neutron diffraction. Moreover, the specific heat Cp (H,T), AC susceptibility χ(H,T) and DC magnetization M(H,T) measurements on well-characterized single crystal samples of the undoped BCPO and 5% Zn-doped BCPO with the field applied along main crystallographic axes were performed in order to study the unique low temperature magnetic behaviour exhibited in this system, such as anisotropy of the magnetic properties, impurity-induced magnetism by the substitution of non-2+ magnetic cations (e.g. Zn ) and frustration. The magnetic phase diagram (H-T) under low field has been constructed. Further results obtained by close collaborators, based on the measurements made on single crystal samples grown in this thesis, including field-induced quantum phase transitions, NMR, Raman studies are attached directly at the end of this thesis.

Interaction between liquid aluminium and solid iron Al-rich intermetallics formation

Intermetallic phases formation is one of the phenomena, which when coupled to thermal and mechanical strains leads to the premature wear of aluminium die casting tools made out of steel. This work focuses on two aspects of this wear problem. The first and major part investigates a simplified chemical system Fe(s)–Al(l) at 700 °C in order to study the formation of the intermetallic compounds. The second part focuses on the limitations of the tool wear by testing different coatings on the steel currently used for die casting. Experiments are performed on two sample types, differentiated by their interface orientation between the two initial phases (vertical and horizontal). Observation are also of two types. Post mortem observations are performed by light microscopy and both scanning and transmission electron microscopy. In situ observation are performed by X-ray tomography, that allows to follow the evolution of the intermetallic layer with time. In the Fe(s)–Al(l) system, one main phase, namely Fe2Al5 , forms with a particular morphology called tongue-like feature in the iron matrix. Tongue tips are generally single crystals. It is also observed that these exhibit a periodical contrast at the nanometre scale. This contrast is found to be due to a slight chemical variation within the existence domain of Fe2Al5. This splitting is linked to the spinodal decomposition of the phase observed at higher temperature. At the interface between tongues and the iron matrix, a layer of about hundred nanometres that surrounds the tongues is observed. It corresponds to the Æ2 FeAl phase. Iron matrix, due to the tongue growth, suffers a plastic deformation that is observed by recrystallisation of the direct tongue surrounding. The induced strain field also leads to porosity formation at the interface between the tongues and the matrix. Pores are then trapped in the Fe2Al5 phase and partially disappear near from the liquid interface. At this interface, a layer of the order of 10μm of Fe4Al13 is observed. The thickness of this layer is stable in the explored time range of 0-4 h. However, intermetallic blocks that detach from the layer are observed in the liquid. This is interpreted as mainly due to the dissolution of the formed layer in the bath to achieve its saturation in Fe. Intermetallic thicknesses and tongue density measurements as functions of time allow to highlight the presence of three main growth regimes. The first at the beginning of the contact corresponds to rapid emergence of the tongues in the matrix. The second is linked to their progressive slow down while they start to thicken. Both thickening and tip growth are in competition from the beginning of this regime. A third regime is however defined and corresponds to a more stable growth during which thickening and tip growth still act in parallel is but their effect is less visible as they vary with the square root of time. The tongue growth observed at the beginning of the reaction is explained by a growth front destabilisation, similarly to the destabilisation of a planar front that leads to dendritic solidification described by Mullins and Sekerka. A calculation based on their model is proposed and confirms the effect of the law aluminium diffusion in iron but is limited by assumptions made for its development. Technological investigation proceeds by modification of the studied system and comparison with the fundamental one. Two ferrous materials and one aluminium alloy are studied. In addition, different coatings deposited by electroless plating on one of the ferrous substrates are tested. A quality coefficient is proposed in order to compare the result of the contact between coating and liquid aluminium. One Co-based coating is revealed as the most promising material that allows to limit the wear of the ferrous part by liquid aluminium.

The Effect of Mg on Slag Reactivity in Blended Cements

Blast-furnace slags are widely used as supplementary cementitious materials in blended cements because of their relatively high reactivity. This study describes the effect of substituting Ca by Mg on the reactivity of synthetic glass with similar composition to slags, keeping the basicity ratio constant. The glass reactivity was assessed using a multi-technique approach including dissolution rate experiments at high dilution, calorimetry, X-ray diffraction combined with Rietveld quantitative phase analysis and electron microscopy image analysis of blended cement pastes. The effect of glass hydration on the hydration product assemblage was assessed by comparing experimental data to thermodynamic modelling. The results show that reactivity was not affected significantly by Ca by Mg substitution at constant basicity. The relative reactivities from the dissolution experiments, calorimetry and image analysis are in agreement and show a dependence of reactivity on basicity but not on Mg content. The release of Mg from the glasses led to the through-solution precipitation of hydrotalcite-like hydration products. Under the high pH conditions studied, there was no indication of incongruent glass dissolution or the formation of a leached passivating layer. The experimental results on changes in the cement hydration product assemblage by glass addition were supported by thermodynamic modelling and generally show an increase in calcium-aluminosilicate-hydrate, AFm, and hydrotalcite-type reaction products.
